Why is Greece in trouble?

Pulled this from Ace of Spades’ Overnight Open Thread.

We’ve giggled about Greece already here, why not do it a little more?

Here a sample of policies that led to the crash. After fifteen years of contribution, a person could retire at 110% of his salary. Retirement was possible at the youthful age of fifty. The unmarried [...]

Greece: Liberalism in an awesome little microcosm

Greece continues their meltdown.

Here’s the summary:

“OMG we’re brokage!”

“OMG there’s gonna be cuts!”

“OMG OMG don’t cut my stuff, dammit!”

And there you have it.

From Bloomberg:

Greece’s GDP will decline 4 percent this year and 2.6 percent next year, according to the Finance Ministry.

European Union Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said yesterday that the austerity measures Greece agreed [...]

9.7% unemployment good news? Must be a Democrat in office!

From the Hot Air link, we read that columnist Tommy Christopher sees that March jobs reports, which has unemployment holding at 9.7%, is super-duper good!

The headline:

March Jobs Report Good News for America, Bad News for GOP

All right!

Nothing like being a hair under double-digit unemployment to get those happy shivers going down your spine.

White House Press [...]

When you open the door....

Most of us already know that the Brits are done.

If you follow the news at all, you already know what I mean, so I’m not going to elaborate much beyond that.

However, there is still hope for us in this country, so how about we check out the idiocy going on in other countries, point [...]

The Health Care Albatross and some advice for the Dems

albatross-l-stare

Old Nancy seems to be limping her way ever closer to her goal of 216.  She swears she’s got the votes to get this done, and probably by tomorrow afternoon, barring some other delay, we’ll know whether it’s still safe to get sick in this country or not.

But with them so close to their goal, we [...]

Brooks: Obama can't get anything done, so he's a moderate, or something

David Brooks swings so wildly back-and-forth in some of his opinion pieces, I’m surprised his glasses haven’t flown off.  One moment, the liberal commenters on his NYT posts call him a crazed right-winger, and the next moment republican commenters are saying he’s a radical leftist media-type.  I guess to be a moderate, which Brooks is [...]

Greece: Our Crystal Ball?

For the past few months, we’ve had the opportunity to watch the people of Greece participate in a near-freefall of their economy and social system.  There’s riots and protests and flaming bottles and overturned cars and heads stomped by horses.  And while I don’t think they’re nice enough to be doing all of this for [...]

Give us your tired, your poor, your HIV infected....

statue_liberty6

This has been discussed for quite a while, and it has of course been controversial ever since its implementation, but thank goodness we’ve finally gotten around to lifting the ban on HIV infected tourists.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention together announced the [...]

Obama frets about Yemen’s economy during radio address

yemen

In his weekly radio address, Obama talked about the Christmas Day terrorist attempt aboard Northwest Flight 253.

An al-Qaida affiliate in Yemen apparently ordered the Christmas Day plot against a U.S. airliner, training and arming the 23-year-old Nigerian man accused in the failed bombing, President Barack Obama said Saturday.

In the address, the [...]

The Gitmo shell-game continues

We dropped a few on Palau.

Shipped some to New York.

How about if you flatlanders in Illinois get ready for your share now, too?

The Land of Lincoln may still be licking its wounds–and certain real estate transactions–over Chicago’s losing the Olympics to Rio, but the Obama Administration has delivered up a small consolation prize: the state’s [...]
